I find giving benchmarks to be invaluable to me to gauge my students' progress, but, more importantly, to help reduce their stress about taking a standardized test written by someone other than their teacher. The practice of working through the same content but written in different words than they are used to hearing from me helps them tremendously when taking their state exams.
